Bad Tatoos Biography

In the early 1950s, when tattoos were the indelible mark of a lowlife, an erudite professor of English--a friend of Gertrude Stein, Thomas Mann, Andre Gide, and Thornton Wilder--abandoned his job to become a tattoo artist (and incidentally a researcher for Alfred Kinsey). Bad Boys and Tough Tattoos tells the story of his years working in a squalid arcade on Chicago's tough State Street. During that time he left his mark on a hundred thousand people, from youthful sailors who flaunted their tattoos as a rite of manhood to executives who had to hide their passion for well-ornamented flesh.
Bad Boys and Tough Tattoos is anything but politically correct. The gritty, film-noir details of Skid Row life are rendered with unflinching honesty and furtive tenderness. His lascivious relish for the young sailors swaggering or staggering in for a new tattoo does not blind him to the sordidness of the world they inhabited. From studly nineteen-year-olds who traded blow jobs for tattoos to hard-bitten dykes who scared the sailors out of the shop, the clientele was seedy at best: sailors, con men, drunks, hustlers, and Hells Angels.
These days, when tattoo art is sported by millionaires and the middle class as well as by gang members and punk rockers, the sheer squalor of Bad Boys and Tough Tattoos is a revelation. However much tattoo culture has changed, the advice and information is still sound:
Body art can be a beautiful thing, but when tattoos go bad, they go really bad...
Even the great artists had their off days, but while Picasso or Monet could screw their cock-ups into a ball and throw them in the nearest bin, when tattoo artists get it wrong their mistakes last, well, forever.
From tributes to loved ones that end up more like terrible insults, to attempts at animals or landscapes that look like they've been drawn by children, here's our favourite examples of when body art goes bad. Some of those tattoos are obviously very badly drawn, but the person having it on their skin agreed to it. Or at least I hope they did and they are not tattoos that just turned out extremely bad.
Who is anyone to judge someone else's tattoos. It's their life, their skin. It doesn't mean they are mad or need a lobotomy. It's their choice and they are not harming anyone else.
I am a 56 year old grandmother and I had my first tattoo at 50. Maybe it WAS a midlife crisis, maybe I just finally decided I don't give a flying fishcake what anyone else thinks and I did it for me....I do not regret having it done. In face I am going back for more. To me it is just something I want to do.
My daughters aren't impressed. They think I am crazy. But as I told them, it's my body, I don't question what you do with yours. Live and let live.
And if anyone is interested, check out 'Skull boy' on you tube or just google him. His tattoos are absolutely amazing, and he seems like a really down to earth nice human being. Some of the tats pictured are seriously questionable but i imagine that even the poo tat had to have been agreed to first!
As a man with tattoos who is approaching his 60th Birthday and who began having tattoos done aged 15 I do have some regrets. What looked hard and cool aged 15 looks less so later in life. They are, however, a constant reminder to me that young people who can make bad judgements and do some worrying things can eventually turn out not quite so bad in the end.
TATTOOS ARE UGLY! DAVID BECKHAM IS A POOR ROLE-MODEL WITH HIS UGLY GRAFFITTI ON HIS BODY.
