Actually, the base form of the word "tribal" is "tribe". So, the word "tribal" is an adjective that means the things deal with tribes. The Origins of Tribal Tattoo Meanings
In ancient times, tribal tattoo was used for a symbol of identity dealing a certain tribe. Other than that, it was used for expressing religion or spiritual belief.For some tribes, tattoos were used for self protection to camouflage their selves in the woods. However, modern tribal art is usually adapt the style from Aztec, Samoan, Polynesian, Indian, Hawaiian, Egyptian, Mayan, and Maori. These tribes use tattoo for identification, social status, and even medicinal purposes. Overall, the black tribal tattoo designs are usually impresses mythical and mysterious meaning.
The word tattoo was actually derived from the word "tatau" from Polynesian. All of the people in Marquesan island in Polynesia was tattooed. They regarded those symbols as a form of language. Usually the image was inspired by animals, like shark teeth to represent protection, shells which means wealth, or turtles fish hooks, lizards, etc.
Maori tribe, in New Zealand, has facial tribal tattoos which were different from each other. It represented the inner strength. This was because Maori tribe believed that the time when someone dies, the light will shine directly through you and the tattoo would show who you are.
The Indian tribe was called the Haida. They lived on the Northwest coast of America. The style of the tattoos are so similar to the woodcarving of the Haida, like beavers, fish thunderbirds, bears, etc. This was because they believed that if you have a certain tattoo, you partly take over the strength of that animal. Therefore, the haida style is forceful and masculine. Mostly the picture is about the Indian astrology.
Borneo tribe is situated above Indonesia. The tattoos here were the symbol of protection and the proof of achievement. The image in this tattoos are usually flowers, scorpions, spirals, dragons, or dogs. The color is usually bold with simple coloring.Most tribal tattoos are solid black in design, but some artists will through in variuos shades and colors to break up the design.
For the most part tribal tattoos are derived from ancient tribal art, and have no significant meaning. They tend to be random patterns of lines and curves that are put together in order to create an abstract form of art.
Modern tribal tattoos are based off of ancient tribal designs, such as Borneo, Aztecs, Indian, Hawaiian, Maori, Samoan, and Polynesian. These tribes use their tribal art to depict rites of passage, social status, family identification, and for medicinal purposes. Each tribe has their own way and special design that they focus on.

Even though most Borneon tattoos are copied from the Kayan Kenyah and Bakatan tribes, they are the most popular form of tribal style tattooing.
This style of tattoos hold up well over time with it's bold black lines and simple coloring. This style is less prone to fading and blurring when compared to other styles of tribal tattoo that may call for shading and coloring.
Hawaii once had a tradtion of tattooing that is now diminished with the contact with Western culture. These designs have a lot of geometric elements and are primarily black.
