Tatoo Shirts Biography

The Top Gear Stig Tattoo T-Shirt brings to light the endless rumors and theories surrounding the identity of the Stig. Who is that masked man and what are people saying about him? This tattoo-inspired design emphasizes the Stig’s mysterious identity. For Top Gear insiders, the Top Gear Stig Tattoo T-shirt is just that...TOPS! “Some say he isn't machine washable, and all his potted plants are called Steve... all we knI was living in Indianapolis, tattooing underground (it was illegal to tattoo in the state of Indiana, at the time) and going to John Herron School of Art for my BFA. My clients were mainly bikers, with a few other rebels thrown in on occasion. I was stuck in the middle of a non-tattoo state, thirsting for information and the only shop I had been to that was close was Cliff Raven’s in Chicago. His work was so far beyond mine that it was hard to conceive. I was struggling for any information available to elevate my own artistry to a higher level, in any form that I could get. I was getting a tattoo newsletter, when “The First World Tattoo Convention” was advertised in Houston Texas. Sign me up!
So, my brother and I flew to Houston and that changed everything. This is hard for all you guys out there that have been to hundreds of conventions to believe―today, there is literally a convention every weekend―but this was groundbreaking. The only guy I really knew there was D.C. Paul, my mentor, but still, I was in heaven. The convention continued with me meeting new friends, trying to fit in and checking out all of the cool people. One of the coolest, then and now, was Lyle Tuttle. A long-haired, full bodysuited, tattooed hep cat. The true epitome of tattooing, Lyle had been in major publications and was a great spokesman for tattooing. He combined knowledge and wit, and always had a captive audience.
So, on to the collectable. Lyle, at the time, was selling his bodysuit in the form of a long-sleeved, T-shirt. To me, this was the coolest shirt ever conceived. It had been depicted in a 1972 Life magazine article about Lyle and tattooing, so, of course, I wanted one. My friend and, later, business partner Tim McGuire, bought one and wore it for years, until it became threadbare. As small as I was at the time, I was still way too fat for the shirt. (Damn those skinny guys! They get all the cool shirts!) Over the years, I got to know Lyle better and the shirt still haunted me. Now, what with tattoo shirts, purses, shoes and everything else imaginable available everywhere, it’s hard to understand just how cool that shirt was. I had talked to Lyle, hoping that he would re-issue the shirt one day, but he explained that they were very labor intense and expensive to produce. Probably never going to happen. Bummer. So, getting fatter year after year, it looked as if the Lyle Tuttle T-shirt was a lost cause. So be it.
Decades passed and, during one of our tattoo history flashbacks, Robert Benedetti and I hit on the Lyle T-shirt topic. Robert calmly stated that he had a practically new Tuttle shirt that someone gave him at home in the drawer. By now, the size wasn’t important. I know, I’ll make a hat out of it! In any case, I must possess it. Price is no object. So, after a few minutes, Robert informed me that there was something he desired as well. He really liked something we are famous for here in Cincinnati, Queen City Hot Metts hot sausages. Life is good, sausages for shirts―God bless America. I FedExed a box of Metts overnight to Los Angeles and the shirt was mine. Wow!
It just goes to show that it helps to have friends that understand my need to collect. Robert has been instrumental in my collecting, as future articles will show. So, now the elusive Tuttle shirt is mine, or should I say my wife Dot’s, because, unfortunately, I have eaten too many Metts and the shirt won’t fit.
During a St. Louis convention in 2005, Lyle signed the shirt for me and said he didn’t even have one. The ultimate tattoo collector, Lyle will always be one of the coolest guys I’ve met in this business. His love for the history of tattooing and collecting has been as inspiration to me. Chadwick forever! Study your history.ow is, he's called the Stig.”
